Scholarship Information

The A. James Clark School of Engineering offers a variety of scholarships for both incoming and returning engineering students. Financial awards are based on merit and/or need. Students should complete an application by February 15 of each year. Please note that information on other scholarships are available at the Office of Student Financial Aid.

New transfer students should complete the online scholarship application. For best consideration complete the application by May 1 for the upcoming academic year. Award letters will go out over the summer.

University Scholarships for Prospective Undergraduate Students

To apply for these scholarships, apply for admission to a degree granting program at UM. For maximum consideration, prospective freshman and transfer students must submit all admissions materials by December 1.

Banneker/Key Scholarships

The Banneker/Key Scholarship, awarded to the highest achieving entering freshman from Maryland and across the nation, covers the full cost of tuition, mandatory fees, room and board, and a book allowance for four years. Admission to the University Honors Program and eligibility for Honors housing are additional benefits. Scholarship candidates are identified through evaluation of the admission application materials. Academic achievement, extracurricular activities, awards, honors, and an essay are the criteria reviewed. Semifinalists are invited to campus for an interview before final selections are made.

Dean's Scholarship

The Dean's Scholarship provides one or two-year awards of $1,500 to $4,500 to outstanding entering freshman from Maryland. Recipients are identified through evaluation of the admission application materials.

Maryland State Scholarships

The Maryland State Scholarship Administration (MSSA) offers and administers the following scholarships and grants: Educational Assistance Grant, Guaranteed Access Grant, House of Delegates Scholarship, Senatorial Scholarship, and Distinguished Scholarship. They are based on need, merit, or both. For more information, please contact MSSA at 410-974-5370. To be considered for most MSSA aid your FAFSA must be postmarked by March 1 (March 1, 2006 for the 2006-2007 academic year or March 1, 2005 for the 2005-2006 academic year.)

National Merit Scholarship

The University is a sponsoring institution of scholars selected by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) as finalists. Four-year scholarships - $2000 per year for Maryland residents, and from $750 to $2000 per year for out of state students based on need - are awarded. Finalists should follow NMSC's instructions for first choice notifications carefully and observe deadlines to remain eligible for awards.

Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP)

The Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP). Sponsored by the
Office of Naval Research (ONR), NREIP is a 10 week summer research opportunity for undergraduate juniors and seniors, and graduate students, under the guidance of a mentor, at a participating Navy Laboratory. The stipend amounts for the program are $5,500 for undergraduate students and $6,500 for graduate students. U.S. citizenship is required; permanent
residents accepted at certain labs. The application is currently open and must be completed by January 12, 2007. References are due by January 19, 2007.

President's Scholarships

The President's Scholarship provides four-year awards to exceptional entering freshman from Maryland and across the nation. Awards range from $2000 to $4,500 per year. Recipients are identified through evaluation of the admission application materials. Academic achievement, extracurricular activities, awards, honors, and an essay are the criteria reviewed.

Regents Scholarship Program

The Regents Scholars program recognizes the extraordinary academic achievements of the brightest entering freshman from Maryland. This four-year scholarship covers the full cost of in-state tuition, mandatory fees, and room and board, plus a $1000 stipend each academic year. Regents Scholars are automatically admitted to the University Honors Program and are eligible for Honors housing. Award recipients are selected from the most academically talented entering freshman each year.

Transfer Academic Excellence Scholarship

These awards are available to outstanding students transferring from Maryland community colleges. The awards cover in-state tuition and mandatory fees for two years of undergraduate study. To be eligible for consideration, students must have an overall grade point average of 3.5 for all college work attempted and must have completed an Associate of Arts degree or the entire first two years of courses for the major in which the student expects to enroll. Candidate nomination forms are available in late December from the UM Undergraduate Admissions Office or from community college advisers. The deadline for receipt of the application, official transcripts, and scholarships materials is early March. Contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for details.

Weinberg Regents Scholarship

The Board of Regents has designated the Weinberg Regents Scholarship to be awarded to a Maryland community college transfer student in order to continue the commitment to outstanding students. In order to be selected for this award, a student must have exceptional qualifications, including achievement of a 4.0 grade point average, completion of the Associates of Arts degree at a Maryland community college, evidence of creative and intellectual activities or scholarly potential, and have been admitted to one of the University of Maryland System institutions. The deadline for submitting the candidate's application material is June 15. The winner may receive the scholarship for two years, totaling no more than four semesters including summer sessions.

Clark School Scholarship Information

High School Fellowship

The Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP). The American
Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) is now administering SEAP,
sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR). SEAP is an eight week
summer research opportunity at participating ONR laboratories for high
school student who have completed at least grade 9, must be 16 years of age
for most Laboratories, and a U.S. citizen. A graduating Senior is eligible
to apply. The stipend for eight weeks for the summer program is $1,500 for
new students; $1,550 for returning students. The application is currently
open and must be completed by January 26, 2007, references are due by
February 2, 2007

The Hertz Foundation's Graduate Fellowship award, which is based on merit (not need) consists of a cost-of-education allowance and a personal-support stipend.
College seniors wishing to pursue the Ph.D. degree in any of the fields of particular interest to the Foundation, as well as graduate students already in the process of doing so, may apply.

The National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, Inc. (GEM) Fellowship
GEM assists underrepresented minority students in obtaining M.S. degrees in engineering and Ph.D. degrees in engineering and the natural and physical sciences.
Application deadline is
November 1, 2006.

NSF - Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)
Nov. 9th deadline

Amelia Earhart Fellowship Program
Women of any nationality are eligible. Be registered in an accredited Ph.D./doctoral program in a qualifying area of science or engineering closely related to advanced studies in aerospace-related science or aerospace-related engineering.
Deadline: November 16, 2006

The Ford Dissertation Diversity Fellowship Program is an award for which includes study in research-based Ph.D. or Sc.D. programs in engineering.

National Defense Science and Engineering Fellowship

Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship
for Service Program. The SMART Scholarship for Service Program is open only to U.S. citizens, and students
must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible.
Application deadline is
February 5, 2007.

The Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP)
The program offers competitive fellowships to U.S. citizens who are pursuing graduate degrees at the Masters and Doctoral levels, at U. S. accredited colleges and universities in areas of science and engineering that support the NASA research and development mission.
